The latest research on how to maintain healthy breasts—inside and out. Plus, what really causes sagging.

When we think about breast health, cancer surveillance and mammograms often come to mind. But as important as those measures are, (see tip 5), there are lots of other ways to keep your breasts in good shape both inside and out.

We consulted with gynecologists and dermatologists to gather the six most important breast maintenance tips—from which creams have been proved to help preserve breast skin elasticity to what causes sagging (no, it's not breast-feeding) and a little-known consequence of breast augmentation you should know about.

1. Form and Function A body of research that goes back nearly 20 years has found a lower risk for breast and ovarian cancers among women who breast-feed their children. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that women try to breast-feed for the first 12 months of life because of the benefits for both the mother and baby. But doesn't nursing make breasts sag? Not according to a small 2007 study published by the University of Kentucky. The good news is that the study participants who breast-fed were no more likely to have lost elasticity in their breasts than those who didn't. The bad news is that the number of pregnancies a woman had did affect breast elasticity. Other factors that contributed to sagging were age and smoking. Study author and plastic surgeon Brian Rinker explained that the smoking connection was logical because "smoking breaks down a protein in the skin called elastin, which gives youthful skin its elastic appearance and supports the breast."
2. Implants? Not So Fast The list of possible complications related to breast augmentation surgery (with either silicone or saline implants) is long. Just take a look at the FDA consumer handbook on the subject. But the most ominous warning may be this: "Breast implants don't last a lifetime," advises the FDA. "You are likely to have the implants removed, with or without replacement, because of one or more complications over the course of your life." Those complications, the government says, include leaking implants and encapsulation, whereby a woman's immune system rebels against the implant and forms a capsule of hard collagen fibers around what it considers a foreign body. However, the most common issue for women with implants may be the normal aging process of a woman's body. Dr. Stephen B. Baker, a Georgetown University associate professor of plastic surgery, says he warns against breast augmentation for patients in their 20s. "You'll age but your implants won't," he says. "In 10 or 20 years, as your natural tissue loses elasticity, it can hang over the implant like Snoopy's nose. Then you need to get a bigger implant to fill out the skin, and you can only go so big. Or you'll have to get a breast lift." These factors obviously didn't deter the 329,000 women who had breast enlargement procedures in the United States in 2006, but if you're planning on joining them, make sure you've gotten all the latest information before you proceed. 3. The Bounce Factor The most uncomfortable part of running may not be the burn in your legs. A 2007 study by researchers at the University of Portsmouth in England found that women experience an average bounce of about four inches. Some experienced more than double that amount, which, for some women, can interfere with jogging performance and unnecessarily stretch breast tissue. The experts' advice is to invest in a very supportive, well-fitting sports bra even if you think you're not big enough or old enough to need it. Your breasts will thank you someday. 4. The Firm Leslie Baumann, author of "The Skin Type Solution" and a dermatologist in Miami, says that while most breast-firming creams are useless, there are a few that can do the sensitive skin of your breasts some good. A retinoid cream, like Retin A (available with prescription) or Roc Correction (available over the counter) can be applied to the breast at night (be sure to avoid the nipple and areola). Baumann recommends applying Relastin face cream to the breasts in the morning, which has been shown to increase skin elasticity.
5. Keeping Watch Any Ob-Gyn will tell you that the most important regimen for healthy breasts is yearly mammograms. Carol Runowicz, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at University of Connecticut and past president of the American Cancer Society, recommends women begin with yearly mammograms at age 40. But according to a recent report by the National Cancer Institute, many women are not following that advice: Between 2000 and 2005 mammogram usage dropped roughly 7 percent among women between 50 and 64 and 4 percent among women over 65. 6. The Big Picture Your breasts aren't an isolated system—they are affected by how well you treat the rest of your body. Runowicz notes that obesity is associated with an increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer, so maintaining a healthy body weight is just as important for your breasts as it is for the rest of your figure. Exercising—with the correct sports bra, of course—can be one of the most important ways to keep your weight and breasts in check. It can even help protect you if you do get breast cancer, according to research from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. A 2006 study in the journal Cancer found that the level of exercise in the year prior to breast cancer diagnosis affects patients' ability to survive after a diagnosis. So a jog may be a good dose of preventive medicine after all.

2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. If depression has affected your eating, you'll need to be extra mindful of getting the right nourishment. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 

3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. If there's no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well.

Once you air out these thoughts and feelings, turn your attention to something positive. Take action to solve problems. Ask for help if you need it. Feeling connected to friends and family can help relieve depression. (It may also help them feel there's something they can do instead of just watching you hurt.) 

4.Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 

5.Look on the bright side. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal.

    Facial Hair Removal

    Facial hair removal is a problem for both men and women. Unwanted hair can be a cause for great concern for women especially as it is something that is sort to make them UN lady like.

    On the other hand men can also be affected by this as hair could grow on the ear or on the upper part of the cheeks beneath the eye. Women often have unwanted facial hair that appears on the upper lip, chin and sides of the face. Before deciding on the proper removal method, however, you should first determine that the cause of the hair growth is not down to hormones. If you are experiencing abnormal hair growth on these specific areas of the face or if the hair is very thick, you might have a hormonal imbalance. Also, during pregnancy and while taking hormone replacement therapy, unwanted facial hair often crops up or growth is accelerated. Most doctors advise waiting until your hormones settle down to begin treatment. Otherwise, the hair continues to be stimulated by the hormones and treatment isn't as effective.


    Shaving does not change the thickness or growth rate of human hair. Rather, the rough-textured, beveled edge that shaving produces (compared with the softer, tapered tip of uncut hair) may give the appearance of thickening although shaving is a useful and safe method of facial hair removal (and the chief method chosen by men), it is not popular among women.
    Side effects of shaving are generally minimal. Irritation, often caused by components of the shaving lubricant, and minor cuts can occur.


    Epilation, or plucking, is often the first method chosen by patients. The entire hair shaft and bulb are removed, with results lasting six to eight weeks. While this method is probably the least expensive, it is not practical for use over larger areas. Unless the hair is plucked in anagen, the method generally does not change the growth rate of hair.

    Numerous methods are used for epilation, from tweezers to devices that pluck several hairs at once. Hot or cold waxing is also a form of epilation.

    Depilation is the use of a chemical that dissolves the hair shaft, with results lasting up to two weeks. Composed of thioglycolates and mercaptans, and mixed with an alkali compound (calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide), depilatories do not affect the hair bulb. The thioglycolates disrupt disulfide bonds between the cystine molecules found in hair, helping to dissolve the hair shaft.
    Side effects include chemical dermatitis and, occasionally, allergic dermatitis from the sulfur-containing thioglycolates or fragrance added to the compound. The thioglycolates produce hydrogen disulfide gas, a particularly offensive-smelling byproduct.


    The use of lasers in hair removal allows selective targeting of the hair bulb and can diminish regrowth for at least three months. Evidence of permanent hair removal has yet to be established but is under investigation.

    The basis for laser hair removal is the specific targeting of melanin in the hair bulb. Melanin absorbs the light emitted by the laser at a specific wavelength. The energy of the laser converts into heat, causing the selective destruction of the hair bulb. However, melanin in the surrounding epidermis can also be targeted, which may limit the success of the procedure. With too much melanin in the adjacent skin, the laser energy is absorbed into the surrounding epidermis, causing epidermal damage or absorptive interference with less effective hair destruction. Patients with dark hair and light skin have a relatively higher concentration of melanin in the hair compared with the epidermis, allowing for more selective absorption of light within the hair bulb, reducing damage to or interference by the melanin in the epidermis. Conversely, gray or white hair is a poor target for laser energy.

    The most common side effects of laser hair removal are edema and erythema, which generally resolve within 24 hours after treatment. The process itself can be slightly painful because of the short burst of heat energy created. Furthermore, hypo pigmentation and hyper pigmentation may occur and are related to skin color.


    Although electrolysis is a common method of hair removal, its practice is the least standardized. Regulation of the process varies from place to place. In addition, no controlled trials have evaluated the efficacy of the procedure. Success depends on the skill of the operator. However, electrolysis is considered to be a permanent method of hair removal. An electric current is passed through a fine-gauge needle or flexible probe inserted into the skin, destroying the follicular isthmus and lower follicle. In one study, this led to permanent removal of the hair.

    The two basic methods of electrolysis are galvanic and thermolytic. Galvanic electrolysis is the more common method. It destroys the hair follicle using a direct current­induced chemical reaction. The process is variably slow, and repeat treatments are often necessary. Thermolysis uses an alternating current that creates heat within the follicle, causing its destruction. Depending on the operator, the equipment, and the method used, the process can take from 0.02 to 20 seconds per hair. Electrolysis is usually performed on all types of hair but is most effective on hairs in the anagen phase.

    Side effects of electrolysis, which include pain, erythema, and edema, are generally temporary. Scarring, keloid formation in susceptible patients and postinflammatory pigment changes are possible. Patients with pacemakers should not undergo electrolysis, regardless of the method.


    Several oral medications have successfully reduced the growth of facial hair, third-generation oral contraceptives, cimetidine , but long-term safety and efficacy data are lacking.
    Recently, however, the first topical medication for the treatment of unwanted facial hair has demonstrated success. Eflornithine (Vaniqa), an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, has also been used to treat African sleeping sickness in intravenous and oral forms. In animal studies, inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase reduced cell division and other cell functions that are necessary for hair growth. Topical application in humans has been shown to remove facial hair, an effect that may last as long as eight weeks after therapy is discontinued. Currently, eflornithine is indicated only for the removal of unwanted facial hair in women.

    Although eflornithine is indicated as a stand-alone treatment, it may improve the success of laser hair removal when the two are used in conjunction. If the medication is well tolerated, it can be continued as long as it is effective. Hair growth usually returns to pre-treatment levels within eight weeks of discontinuing the medication. While eflornithine is a useful option, it is not a practical first-line therapy. It is perhaps best used in patients sensitive to physical methods of hair removal or to augment one of these methods.

    Skin and Hair Care Tips

    Dry Skin

    We all know what dry skin is and how it feels. One suggestion made in the Cayce readings stands out above all the others: apply peanut oil as a lotion to the area. Should there be continued irritation or a prickling sensation from the oil, add ½ to 1 teaspoonful of dissolved lanolin to the oil.
    A special exercise was given for those people with dry hands and skin. The readings indicated that it would aid the body in assimilation by stimulating the gastric flow. Although this exercise was described in preceding notes, it warrants being repeated here.
    Stretch the arms above the head and reach as high as you can or, even better, grab hold of a bar or other structure that you can safely swing from (the readings suggested a tree limb!). Hold on, relaxing your body, not your grip! Stretch or swing like this until you feel the tension leave your body. Repeat this regularly, once or twice a day. It will aid the body in digestion and assimilation.

    Feet-Dry And Peeling

    If your feet are dry and peeling but a fungal infection (such as athlete's foot) is not suspected, it is likely that poor circulation is one probable culprit. Massage deeply and regularly with equal parts of olive oil and peanut oil. Consider asking your chiropractor or osteopath-lo make a helpful adjustment which will aid circulation in the lower extremities.

    Graying Hair

    Among the suspected causes of graying hair are stress, poor diet, and poor circulation in the scalp. To maintain healthy hair and to prevent graying, Cayce recommended eating the skins of Irish potatoes prepared in one of two ways. First, you can steam the skins in Patapar paper (available in health food stores) or you can prepare a juice from the skins by stewing them in a little water and drinking the juice.
    In both preparations it is stressed not to eat the meat of the potato, but just the skins.


    The readings did not always encourage the removal of moles, those dark spots which we sometimes think are unsightly. However, they did offer a simple suggestion for their removal if this was so desired: To massage the area-on the mole and around it-with castor oil, twice a day. Continue the treatment until the spot goes away.


    Proper care of nails requires vigilance in diet, eliminations, and circulation. In the diet arena, adequate quantities of calcium were stressed. As mentioned earlier, foods rich in calcium include sunflower seeds, cheese, milk, and green vegetables. A good practice is to have a green salad for lunch, sprinkled with sunflower seeds and gelatin.
    Cayce also indicated that the thyroid affects the health of nails. Refer to "Thyroid Therapy" in preceding notes and be sure to include these practices in your health regimen.
    Finally, the readings recommended two different massage compounds for nails and cuticles. The first is simply a drop or two of Atomidine rubbed gently on and around the nail. Although this will tend to color the nail at first, it will also strengthen and prevent its breaking. The second compound was a paste of pure apple cider vinegar and table salt applied in the same way. Choose the one which seems to work for you.

    Poison Ivy

    Anyone who has had poison ivy knows how maddening the persistent itch can be. The readings recommended Atomidine as a remedy taken in the following manner: one to two drops in half a glass of water in the morning for four to five days. Then discontinue.
    In addition, prepare a weakened solution of Atomidine-one teaspoonful to half a glass of waterand sponge off the infected area. This is soothing and will help dry up the rash.
    As is the admonition for almost all skin disorders, take a good eliminant. This will help flush the system of poisons which, because of disturbances from the rash, will accumulate in the superficial circulation. Eno salts is a recommended remedy. Take one teaspoonful in a glass of water daily for eight to ten days during the itchy siege.


    For cutaneous scars or healed wounds the Cayce readings suggest several different scar massage formulas which have as a common ingredient camphorated oil.
    The first step in making this lotion is to add camphor to olive oil in the following manner: Heat four ounces of olive oil, then add one ounce of natural camphor crystals (add it cautiously so as not to spatter and burn yourself).

    Scar Massage Formula

    Mix the following ingredients to create the classic scar massage formula:
    Camphor added to olive oil2 oz
    Lanolin, dissolved½ tsp
    Peanut oil1 oz

    Using your fingertips, gently massage this formula into your scar once or twice daily for five minutes.

    Olive Oil And Tincture Of Myrrh Formula

    You might like to experiment with alternating the Scar Massage Formula with the compound of olive oil and tincture of myrrh.

    Heat 1 tbsp. of olive oil and carefully add 1 tbsp. of myrrh. Make only enough for one application. Adjust the above measurements (always equal amounts) according to your needs, which will be dictated by the size of your Scar.

    Enlist Mind Power The following Cayce reading is a particularly beautiful and insightful one. It represents important element from the Cayce philosophy-that healing is most effective if it first occurs on the spiritual level.

    "Let the scars be removed from. . . the own mental and spiritual self. Turn to those things of making application of the fruits of the spirit of truth; love, patience, gentleness, kindness, long-suffering, brotherly love, putting away those little tendencies for being 'catty' at times or being selfish or expressing jealousy and such.

    "Let that mind be in thee as was in Him, who is the way and the truth and the light, and He will make the light of love so shine through thy countenance that few, if any, will ever see the scars made by self-indulgence in other experiences."

    Sunburn results when overexposure to the sun's harsh rays causes a number of changes, including an extreme dilation of the skin's blood vessels. Hence, the redness and burning sensation occur. The readings specifically advised staying out of the sun between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

    Cayce offered several remedies for sunburn.

    Don't Press Your Luck First and foremost, do not stay out in the sun. If you burn, whether you're on vacation or not, do not expose your skin to further damage. This is common sense-but unfortunately not common practice until the burn is so severe that the sun becomes unbearable.

    Pure Apple Cider Vinegar After taking a lukewarm bath, rub your body down with plain, pure apple cider vinegar. This natural remedy will help soothe the pain of the burn.

    Glyco- ThymolineApply pure Glyco- Thymoline to the burned areas for relief of pain.

    Vaseline If rough spots appear as a result of a burn, wash the area with a mild soap and then apply Vaseline to the affected area. Repeat until the condition is improved.

    Spirits of Camphor In the event that there is a more acute rash or outbreak, apply spirits of camphor directly to the area with a sterile cotton ball. Wait an hour or two, then take a tepid bath, followed by a rubdown with pure peanut oil.


    Medical science contends that warts are caused by a virus and can be transmitted either to other people or to other parts of the host's body. They occur most frequently on the hands, arms, and legs. Children are particularly susceptible to these unsightly bumps.

    While Cayce was not in disagreement with medical science's theory, he did pinpoint other sources for warts.

    On the one hand, he indicated that they were the result of eliminations being thrown off from the body through improper channels, the small tumor or wart being the result.

    On the other hand, they are more common in young people between the ages of ten and twenty because of the glandular changes happening during puberty. During the time period of these changes, the cellular forces of the body are in transition, and warts can result.

    Cayce offered several remedies for warts, ranging from hypnotic suggestion to a paste made of castor oil and baking soda. Of the many Cayce remedies people have tested over the years, these recommendations for warts have been among the most often reported as being successful.

    Castor Oil Apply castor oil to the wart twice a day, massaging it in thoroughly, gently, and persistently.

    Castor Oil and Baking Soda Prepare a paste of castor oil and baking soda. Apply this to the wart overnight, securing it with a loose bandage or Band-Aid. Do this until the wart disappears.

    20% Solution of Hydrochloric Acid Using a small glass rod or broom straw, place a drop of the solution on the bump. Do this daily. As the wart begins to discolor, do not pick at it, for this may result in infection. Rather, let the wart "wear off" with time.

    Power of Suggestion The best way to incorporate Cayce's recommendation to use suggestion to treat an unsightly wart is to visualize its disappearance while persistently applying any of the above remedies. Belief that the remedy you choose will work is vital to its success.

    Wrinkles And Sagging

    To avoid wrinkles, Cayce suggested massage and the use of the Peanut Oil Lotion around the eyes, the chin, and the throat. Application of mud packs was also mentioned as a deterrent because of the tightening effect it has on the skin. For under-eye wrinkles Cayce suggested applying pure castor oil and leaving it on overnight. Also, proper rest and a relaxed, smiling face will work wonders!

    Skin Toner:

    Make an herbal infusion of chamomile or lavender flowers by pouring near-boiling water over 2 to 3 tablespoons of fresh or dried flower tops.
